Jaws

Jaws is a video game in the action genre developed by LJN Toys, Ltd. and published by LJN Toys, Ltd. originally released in 1987. It is currently playable on DOS.

Jaws is an ambitious shark hunting simulator based on Steven Spielburg's hit movie of the same name. Unlike most fishing games, the goal of Jaws is very limited: hunt big sharks to earn money, so you can upgrade equipment to . . . hunt more sharks in more dangerous waters.

You start with a boat and $8. 000 in cash, which gets smaller very quickly as you buy modern shark hunting equipment. You can choose from a wide range of places to sail to, whether it's the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean, Kingston or Acapulco. The hunting itself is a bit boring, a bit like fishing, in fact. I thought the shark hunting would be more exciting and suspenseful, like in the movie, but alas, the game's dull CGA palette and awkward interface don't convey that too well. However, the game does have some nice touches, such as the different weapons and ships that you can upgrade as you earn money from selling sharks. In each port there is a 'weapon school' where you can get a certification for each weapon, which improves your accuracy with it.

Overall, Jaws, despite the name, is a somewhat dry and repetitive shark hunting simulator. It's not a waste of a blockbuster license, but Box Office hasn't exactly taken advantage of it either. It's only worthwhile for diehard fans of fishing and/or shark hunting who want a fishing game focused on a unique angle.
