War Zone

War Zone is a game strategy and published by Cases Computer Simulations Ltd.. Originally released in United Kingdom in 1984. Currently you can download and play the game for ZX Spectrum.

War Zone is a strategy war game for one player who must fight and defeat another computer-controlled army in a 3 x 3 area made up of 9 x 10 grids. The area is composed of plains, roads, hills and forests and affects the movement and use of each player's army. Each army consists of Artillery, Infantry and Tanks and the total number can be selected between 15 and 150 pieces. If a player manages to take over the other player's home sector with no enemy troops inside, or there is a 3:1 troop ratio, then the game is won.

Each player takes turns moving or using as many troop pieces as they want with a choice of eight commands that are entered with the keyboard and END is used to allow the other player to make their moves. Each troop type has different attributes, with Artillery being slow moving and used for close combat and long range shooting, Infantry being fast moving and used for close combat and scouting, with terrain making no difference, and finally Tanks being slow moving and used for close combat and medium range shooting.

Plains have no effect on movement, roads increase movement, hills decrease movement but increase shooting, and forests decrease movement and no shooting. As troops move through the area, melee combat is initiated when a troop is next to an enemy troop, shooting can be used if an enemy troop is in range and there is only one shot for each troop at a time, and finally an air strike can be used, but only one is available at a time. Also on the screen there are mines to be avoided and if any troops move out of the area then they are shot for desertion.
